CBD: Science Behind & Everything Else To Know

May 1, 2018

The chemical compounds present in the cannabis flowers are called cannabinoids. These chemical compounds are sticky in nature and are called glandular trichomes. One single trichome has different types of cannabinoids. The compounds vary, as different ones are used for recreational or medicinal purposes. These compounds are different in appearance as well as their functions. Cannabinoids are sometimes referred to as exo- cannabinoids and phytocannabinoids.

The compound in the cannabinoid decides whether it would get the consumer high or heal. The intention for consumption also has a role to play.

Cannabinoids work together with compounds similar to the ones present in the body, called endocannabinoids, and produces its effects.

Cannabinoids have the ability to provide relief from inflammation, pain, nausea, anxiety.

CBD or cannabidiol is non- psychoactive in nature. It helps in calming down the consumer and has several other benefits. Presently, there are several ailments which can be treated by CBD. It also has great promises in providing relief from anxiety, chronic pain, heart diseases, PTSD, OCD, schizophrenia, epilepsy, arthritis etc. In fact, there are several researches as well as patients who have confirmed the great potential of this oil in treating cancer.

How Does CBD Work?

One of the 80 components in cannabinoids in cannabis, CBD binds with receptor cells in the body. They are present throughout the body, most of them are present in the brain.

On taking cannabis, cannabinoids tie up to the receptor cells and form a system called the endocannabinoid system (ECS). This affects various factors like mood, immunity, sleep, reproduction, appetite etc.

Apart from interacting with CBD receptors. Cannabinoids also link to other receptors in the body, like:

  1. Serotonin receptors, which help by providing relief from stress and thus balances overall stress.

  2. Vanilloid receptors kill pain.

  3. Adenosine receptors help induce sleep.

It is known that CBD can also inhibit a fatty acid called fatty acid amide hydrolase or FAAH, which breaks down organic endocannabinoid anandamide present in the body. This improvises the operations related to mood, memory, pain and appetite.

Apart from CBD, THC is the other popular compound in cannabis. Unlike CBD, it is psychoactive in nature. Both CBD and THC can be extracted from the parts of cannabis, like stalks, cannabis seeds and flowers. CBD is present in more quantity in hemp, whereas THC is dominant in cannabis.

THC is more helpful in easing stress, providing relaxation, inducing sleep and reducing pain. CBD is beneficial in treating anxiety, psychosis and epilepsy.

How Does CBD Help Us

Cannabis has been used by man since several years. The presence of CBD has made it a popular herb in the medical world.

However, because of being associated with getting the user ‘high’, CBD has been banned in most of the parts of the world. Fortunately, with new developments and researches, its potential to treat chronic diseases has led to its legalization in several countries.

CBD has an effect on multiple pathways. With several trials and studies being conducted, it has been proven that it can provide treatment for even the most chronic or incurable diseases like lupus, diabetes, parkinson's disease.

The Future of CBD

It is true that over several years, cannabis consumers have preferred high THC indica strains as they have an intense psychoactive effect. Because of this, the popularity of CBD strains has gone down dramatically.

As the significance of CBD- infused strains is being realised, growers and marketers are focussing on it increasingly with passing time. Several strains like Harlequin and Charlotte's Web have proven to possess great medical benefits. Apart from the strains present, new ones are also being developed.

The future of CBD is bright. It is conclusive that it provides a list of health benefits. CBD surely is destined to change the face of the medical world.
